July 19th, Tharp's Log (Cabin) and the Meadows

This was our last stop of the day. Sam was eager to do some hiking and wanted to carry his heavy special bag full of toys. He was also eager to tell everyone we met about it!

The trail started near Cresent Meadow. It still amazes me that this tranquil oasis exists just an hour from the deserty town we were staying in.

We took a quick side trip to Chimney Tree...(the blacked part of the tree was the work of forest fire...fires can hollow out the middle of these trees but somehow they still seem to survive!)

Sam made a 'hockey' game with his imagination...

So, after I left Sam to play 'hockey' with Dadda, I met a couple walking back from Tharp's Log Cabin...they tell me that it's not a cabin, but an actual tree that he used as his house...so as I enjoyed the meadow tranquility, I contemplated seeing another downed sequioa...walking all this way (this was like hour 9 of our adventuring this day) to see another downed sequoia. When I finally reached the sign describing Tharp's summer life in this beautiful meadow, I wasn't at all surprised to see this log...Tharp's log...I can't tell you how disappointed I was!

As I was angerly adding this to my growing list of things wrong with this country, I turned around to see this...known locally as Tharp's cabin...OOPS!!! Sometimes I'm just a jerk!

More pictures of Log Meadow (named, I'm guessing, due to the large fallen sequoia)

Sam tired of his hockey game and decided to make a hole in the tree, which he proudly showed me...
