March 15th, Saying Goodbye

I've spent the last couple of days coping with the reality that my Grammie is quite sick. And I've spent last night saying goodbye to her. I got the call this morning that I should come home, but I couldn't get a flight until tonight arriving tomorrow at noon. They've taken Grammie off of life support (as per her predetermined wishes) and expect that she'll pass away around in a couple of hours from now.

I can't express what my Grammie has meant to me and will always mean to me. I've been so scared over the last 10 or so years that I'd loss her before my wedding, then before she'd hold my child. And now, I've got to say, that I am happy for her but so, so sad.

My Grammie has had a hard life, but never complained. She just worked hard, prayed hard, loved hard and lived with peace. And now, thankfully, she will pass peacefully as well.

During the hardest years of my life, I'd go to church with her then to her house for lunch then for an afternoon of visiting and knitting. We'd talk about everything, from her life to my life and the lives of our family. She was so, so proud of each and every member of our family. Once she told me of her husband, Parker (my grampy) and how much she misses him and how she can't wait to see him again (he passed away when my mom was little and my Grammie was 8 months pregnant with my uncle). It came to a point when Grammie didn't have the wind to stand up and sing, but there was one day that I'll never forget, that she just stood up during one hymn and sang "then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee..."

Grammie was living with my mom and Wayne for the past few years. She'd broken her hip three times and walked with a walker, but was quite self sufficient. Every once in a while, she'd get frustrated though and say that her old legs don't carry her very fast. She fell last week and broke her arm and has been in the hospital since. A bladder infection set in and she's been having mini strokes...

Grammie has led the fullest life! She's travelled around the world twice and driven across Canada a couple of times. She's lived to take part in most of her grandchildrens' weddings and has delighted in watching her greatgrandchildren play. Her memory has been spotty and for the longest time, she confused Sam with my cousin's baby Gabe (who is now 3). But this Christmas, the best present that I got was hearing her call to Sammy and telling him what a big name he has to live up to.

A couple of years ago, my Grammie's younger sister and bestfriend pass away. When my mom went into Grammie's room to tell her the news, my Grammie already knew. She'd had a dream. I'm convinced that God told her.

Grammie never missed an oppratunity to say how much she loved us and how proud she was of us. Grammie never missed a recital, a school or church concert, a crisis, a celebration...Grammie lived with no regrets.

So this night I spent saying good bye. I'm convinced that although I can't be there to hold her hand and tell her that I love her, that God is telling her better than I could. I take great joy in the fact that my Grammie will depart from her well worn body and run freely through the pearly gates into the arms of our Heavenly Father. And He will say that she has been a good and faithful servant and say "this is your reward..." and there will be Parker and Auntie Joyce and her other brothers and sisters and her grandson Everett and her Mom and Dad and everyone else who's gone before her who's lives she's touched for Christ. And one day, I will take my place singing praises to Jesus right along side my Grammie.

These aren't my favorite pictures, but they're the ones that I have. As you look at them, please thank God for my Grammie and pray for my family who will miss her so...

March 12th, Reach for the Stars!!!

My darling husband has been going into work at the crack of dawn (maybe a little later) so that he can come home at a decent hour. And we REALLY like it! Yesterday and today, we played with bubbles and the red ball.

March 9th, Park Day!!!

Sunday afternoon we squeezed in a trip to our favorite park. Sam loves to climb and after he was done climbing on the play equipment, he climbed on park benches...

March 7th, My Little Chef...

Sam is such a good little helper. He REALLY, REALLY likes to help, so since I was making fish cakes for supper (I forgot how involved they are!) I needed a side project for my little chef...needless to say, it kept his quite occupied :)

PS-the green thing in some of the shots is celery...which he ate, once he dipped it in, you guessed it, chocolate pudding...

Not So Long Ago...

Ashton came over for a sleepover (well his parents came to get him after he went to bed - not long after- but it was a fun concept for the boys) and he and Sam had a great time! PS-sorry for the poor photo quality. I was taking video then snapped these on that camera without fussing with camera settings...I didn't want to miss the moment :)

Mar 7th, A Fast Walk to the Gardens...

With the stroller loaded down with camera gear, baby gear, and our 25 lb baby, I hulled tail to the gardens (we were lazy this morning and left the house late-relatively speaking since we keep to no external schedule, just Sam's). After powering up a super steep hill, my quads cramped in a nice way (you know the way it feels when you've had a good work-out). Sadly, my favorite spots were under water (sprinklers), so we were left to explore the dirt that was an herb garden. Sam still had fun and I still took pictures :)

Sam poked his fingers in the little holes and asked (himself, presumably) 'in there?' and then he'd answer 'dirty' or 'leaves' or 'water'...

He practiced his balancing...

He told a joke...

to his new friend...(her grandparents didn't speak English but were quite pleased when I asked (with lots of hand gestures) if I could take her picture)...

I think that Sam and I can have fun just about anywhere :)

So, for the camera buffs out there...here's a trick from the Exposure Compensation book (thanks again Nancy!)...when you meter off of a primarily green area, it'll turn out too dark...

So, you take note of the aperture value and the shutter speed (in P, S or A mode) then go to M mode and dial in those values, then change the shutter speed until a -2/3 exposure is indicated...this was the first time I'd used that tip, but I think it worked :) (I believe the book calls it 'using Mr. Green Jeans')

March 5th, What?!? No pictures!!!

Sadly, it is true. I haven't got a single new picture to post! And since youtube is down for service, I can't share any videos either.

Let's see, what is new?

Well, two separate people in two separate situations asked if I was Canadian yesterday based on my 'accent' (bringing the total up to 5 since Mike left just a few weeks ago).

Sam went to the doctor's today. I had him excited to meet Dr. Guzman. We practiced his name and I told Sam that he could shake his hand (his new fav thing to do either adding 'peace' as in 'peace of Christ' or 'meet you' as in nice to meet you). We also talked about meeting a nurse. We had a young nurse that wasn't overly friendly. The doctor talked over Sam (which is mildly understandable) and when I finally interjected for Sam to shake his hand and say nice to meet you, Sam was too scared and just stared at him. Here the nurses give the needles, so in the end, Sam had a good experience with the doctor. However, when the nurse gave Sam the needles (three!!!), he cried out "why! nurse owie". Then she immediately left the room and I was left with a crying little boy wondering why she didn't apoligize for hurting him (he's learned to say "sorry" and what it means. when she left, he literally said "nurse, sorry?"). So, when she came back in, I politely asked if she'd say sorry. So she did and asked if he was okay. Sam quietly said "yeah." My broken heart broke all over again! He was doing fine until he discovered the band-aids on his legs and was distraught over the 'paper' (long story about my toe and a band-aid). After distraction stopped working, Adam soaked him in the tub and ripped off the 'papers' and Sam stopped talking about his owies.

March 2nd...Happy Birthday, Nannie!!!

Before making a special video for Nannie, we got Sam to repeat after us "birthday." When we turned on the camera, this is what we got! (Good memory, the last time we sang the song was Feb 7th!)

Happy birthday, Nannie! We wish we could be there to celebrate with you, but we're excited that you're going to come visit!
